This talk explores the role of intention in Islamic art: why works were made, what they were meant to achieve, and the extraordinary efforts undertaken to fulfil those aims. It considers how faith, ethics, and aesthetics shaped artistic practice, revealing the personal, spiritual, and cultural motivations behind these remarkable works.
This workshop will explore a step by step approach in creating a traditional design as inspired by Maghrebi-Andalusian manuscripts. Participants will learn the traditional Al Qisma (division) method in drawing the Islamic Geometric Pattern as well as techniques to apply vegetal ornamentation, traditional paints and gold leaf.
Join the tradional woodworking artist Hassan Khaled to explore Islamic Biomorphic (Nabati) design and fretwork. In this beginner-friendly workshop, you will learn to transfer Islamic biomorphic pattern onto wood, set up a safe workspace, and cut curves using a coping saw. Participants will gain foundational hand-tool skills to create their own Islamic woodwork piece at home.
Join glass artist Ingrid Parrington as she walks through the steps of transforming a hand-drawn rosette into sculptural glass art. The pattern will be translated into an origami model, then made into silicone and plaster-silica molds, and finally made into a kiln-fired glass piece of cast glass.
Watch as Paul demonstrates the creation of a complex hybrid Islamic Geometric Pattern, from development with compass and ruler, through digital constructions, and finally into a ceramic mosaic.
Join Ahmet Faruk as he sketches five iconic domes and paints one of them live, sharing the cultural significance and architectural features that make each structure unique.
Alefiya will present on the rich symbolism of cypress trees, blossoms, and gold. Following the presentation, she will guide participants through a practical demonstration, teaching them how to apply gold to a pre-drawn cypress design. This workshop beautifully blends artistic technique with an exploration of spiritual meaning.
