Cheating in online video gaming is big business. Every year, millions of gamers log in to their devices intending to misrepresent their skill by using cheating hardware and software tools. And that’s common for just a single video game! Sound familiar? It should. It looks a lot like the threats credentialing programs face when test-takers try to “game the system” on devices we don’t control.

In this session, a panel of assessment security experts will explore what credentialing programs can learn from the video game industry’s fight against cheating. You’ll hear about the creative tactics used to detect and prevent fraud in gaming environments, attack vectors shared by both industries, and how game publishers have balanced user experience with fairness and integrity.

Whether you’re responsible for test development, delivery, or program integrity, you’ll leave this session with practical ideas to strengthen your security approach — and a clearer framework for deciding what to prevent, what to detect, and what to monitor over time.

Learning Objectives:

  • Uncover similarities between the video game and assessment industry in terms of the types of technological cheating occurring in both.

  • Better understand some of the common controls used to prevent this cheating in both industries.

  • Recognize some of the new and innovative methods that testing organizations use to prevent online exam cheating.

  • Recommend new and innovative approaches to prevent online exam cheating that can be borrowed from the game industry.
