Building the Wind Power Supply Chain to Accelerate the Energy Transition in the Middle East and North Africa
The MENA region possesses exceptional wind resources and abundant land, making wind energy a central pillar of affordable and resilient power systems. The potential for new industrial opportunities, local value creation and socio-economic benefits depends on early investments in local supply chain capacity, while existing oil and gas, shipbuilding and heavy manufacturing industries offer opportunities to transition and serve the wind industry. The Middle East and North Africa thus remain at the core of the Global South’s efforts to transform energy systems and develop the technologies and supply chains needed to accelerate the transition in emerging regions.
Against this backdrop, GWEC’s report, “Mission Critical: Building the MENA Wind Energy Supply Chain for a Clean and Just Energy Transition,” provides a timely roadmap for action. It builds on a series of supply chain consultations that GWEC undertook with its members in 2023/2024, as well as GWEC’s global supply chain deep-dive study released at COP28 in 2023. The report aims to unlock the MENA region’s wind energy growth potential by highlighting its strengths and opportunities and supporting policymakers and industry leaders in accelerating wind power deployment across the region.
