What is an ICS file?
An ICS file, sometimes called an iCalendar file, is the standard format calendar apps use to exchange events. It is plain text, defined by RFC 5545, and every major calendar app can read it: Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook, Office 365 and Yahoo.
Inside the file, each event is a VEVENT block holding a title, a start and end time, and optionally a location, description and a recurrence rule. Because it is just text, an ICS file is easy for machines to read and almost impossible for a person to read at a glance, which is what this viewer is for.
How to open an ICS file
- To read it: upload it above.
- On a computer: double click the file and your default calendar app offers to import it.
- Google Calendar: Settings, then Import and export, then choose the file.
- Outlook: File, Open and Export, then Import an iCalendar file.
Sending events to other people?
An .ics attachment works, but plenty of recipients cannot open one on a phone, and any change you make later never reaches them. An add to calendar link adds the event in one tap on whichever calendar they use, and stays up to date if the event changes.
